In this video, expedition leader Marco Tonoli captures an unforgettable Mountain Gorilla encounter on our most recent Uganda safari.

On a rare occasion where the Mountain Gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest made their way out of the forest, the Apex team was perfectly positioned to have an unbelievably up-close experience with the dominant silverback. The Rushegura family, 16 members strong, is dominated by a magnificent silverback called Kabukojo, who shows his confidence and trust as he wanders right through the middle of our group. An incredible moment with one of the most spectacular mammals on our planet.

    Susan Orr says:

Keep your masks on! Gorillas are susceptible to human illnesses! Treat them with respect.

    Marco Tonoli says:

Hi Susan, Thank you for your thoughtful comment. We deeply respect the Mountain Gorillas and fully support the protocols designed to protect them from human-borne illnesses. In this case, masks had been lowered with ranger guidance while at a safe distance in open terrain. What we didn’t anticipate was the silverback choosing to walk straight through the middle of the group — a sudden and extraordinary moment. In the excitement, a few of us didn’t manage to mask up again in time. It was a brief but important lapse, and we take it seriously. Encounters like this are a powerful reminder of the responsibility we all share in protecting these incredible animals.”
