Uganda Chimp Trek — An Apex Experience

Wow…what an absolutely epic morning spent in the forest!
After days of anticipation building toward our Chimp trekking experience in Uganda, the adventure exceeded every expectation, not only for our guests but also for us as guides leading the expedition.
Even before arriving at Kibale National Park, we had already enjoyed some incredible primate sightings along the journey. Highlights included Patas Monkeys, Tantalus Monkeys, Olive Baboons, Red-tailed Colobus Monkeys, and Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys, to name just a few. Yet, as exciting as those encounters were, they were merely the opening act for what was still to come.
On our way to Ndali Lodge, anticipation continued to build. The lodge itself was one of the most cozy and comfortable places I have ever stayed. Surrounded by stunning crater lakes, exceptional birdlife, and panoramic scenery, it provided the perfect setting to prepare for the adventure ahead.
As we gathered for our Chimp trekking briefing, the majestic Rwenzori Mountains revealed themselves in spectacular fashion. With clear skies and perfect weather conditions, we could not have asked for a better atmosphere. The briefing itself was filled with laughter, especially when Marco, Gareth, and I attempted our best Chimp impersonations, much to the amusement of our guests. After a relaxed dinner, we called it an early night.
We all woke up feeling excited and ready for the big day
Following breakfast, we made the 45-minute drive to the headquarters of Kibale National Park. As we arrived, we were welcomed by local women performing traditional dances, immediately creating a vibrant and uplifting energy that was impossible not to feel.
Once divided into our trekking groups, we headed off to the forest. A short drive brought us to the starting point of the trek, and from the moment we stepped beneath the canopy, the forest felt alive. The morning chorus surrounded us as birds called from every direction and the forest slowly awakened around us.
Then, in the distance, we heard it for the first time, the unmistakable hooting calls of Chimpanzees. The sounds grew closer and closer. Excitement levels rose instantly, and suddenly all of our senses felt heightened. Then came the moment we had all been waiting for, our very first Chimpanzee sighting. Sitting almost at eye level beside us was a chimp calmly observing our group.
“Hoo, hoo, hoo!” The calls echo through the forest
More members of the Chimp family revealed themselves around us. It truly felt as though we had stepped directly into their world. As we ventured deeper into the forest, we encountered a large male Chimpanzee sitting atop a fallen tree. Not only did he provide extraordinary viewing opportunities, but another Chimp soon joined him, allowing us to witness the remarkable bond and social interaction between the two individuals. All around us, the family continued vocalizing, an unforgettable soundtrack to an already magical experience. I have experienced Chimp trekking before, but I had never encountered vocalization quite like this. It made the sighting feel even more special and immersive.
After spending our allocated hour with the chimpanzees, it was time to begin the trek back out of the forest. Even the return journey became an adventure of its own as we navigated muddy elephant paths, resulting in plenty of laughter and unforgettable moments amongst the group. By this stage, the forest was fully alive. Birds called from every direction, shafts of light pierced through the trees, and the atmosphere felt almost surreal. Back at the vehicles, celebrations began immediately before we made our way to lunch at Primate Lodge Kibale.
It was truly an exceptional Chimp trekking experience
This Chimp trekking experience was filled with memories that will last a lifetime. The sounds of the forest, the energy of the Chimpanzees, and the incredible atmosphere created by everyone involved will remain deeply embedded in our memories for years to come. There is something incredibly special about being immersed in such a wild and foreign environment while simultaneously feeling so welcomed and comfortable thanks to the people around you.
