Around Seattle, they refer to it simply as “The Mountain.” On those rare days when Mt. Rainier is visible, at 14,411 feet, it dominates the skyline throughout the region. A snow-covered, glaciated, crevassed volcano subject to appalling storms—sound like something you’d like to try to climb? Well, it did to Duke Brady. He and his partners became the first to attempt The Mountain this year. So put on your parka and join him for Part 1 of his ambitious adventure.
